Origin: A borrowing from Algonquian. Etymons: Algonquian macócqwer, mahcawq.
Etymology: < Carolina Algonquian macócqwer (plural) or Virginia Algonquian mahcawq small pumpkin, gourd, both < the same Proto-Algonquian base.
U.S. Now historical.
A plant formerly cultivated by the North American Indians of Virginia and Maryland, probably a kind of summer squash, Cucurbita pepo var. melopepo.
