Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French manomètre.
Etymology: < French manomètre (P. Varignon 1706, in Hist. de l' Acad. Roy. des Sci.: 1705 28) < mano- mano- comb. form + -mètre -meter comb. form2.
An instrument for measuring the pressure in a gas or liquid; esp. one consisting of a U-tube containing mercury or other liquid, a difference in the pressures acting on the two ends of the liquid column being indicated by a difference in the levels reached by the liquid in the two arms of the U-tube.flame manometer: see flame n.
