A terpenoid compound, C25H3605, originally isolated from a marine sponge, which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent and a potent inhibitor of some phospholipase enzymes. ΚΠ 1980 E. Scheuer in Tetrahedron Lett. 21 1611 We now wish to report isolation and structure of a pentaprenoid with identical end groups but with one C5 moeity cyclyzed to an α,β–unsaturated δ–lactol function. The structure of this compound, which we are naming manoalide, is based on the following data. 1987 Jrnl. Biol. Chem. 262 6531 Manoalide is a marine natural product that has anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative activities and is an irreversible inhibitor of phospholipase A2 and phospholipase C. 1995 Chem. in Brit.
