Etymology: < Anglo-Norman macegref, macecref (also macecrer; Old French macecrier) butcher (see massacre n.).The word also occurs in English surnames of the Middle English period in the forms macecrof, maccecref, macceref, also macecre, macekre, macecrer, massecrer; macecren, mascecren, mascekren, macecrien. A spurious word macegriefs ‘such as willingly buy stolen flesh’, found in Cowell's Interpreter (1607) and hence in later law dictionaries, is due to a misunderstanding of the Anglo-Norman text of Britton I. xxx. §3, which speaks of ‘butchers (mascecreefs, variants macecrefs, macegrefs, mascres, massegrefs) who knowingly sell stolen flesh’.

Obsolete.
