Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: a- prefix6, biotic adj.
Etymology: < a- prefix6 + biotic adj., originally after French abiotique (of a zone) characterized by the absence of life (1869 in the passage translated in quot. 1873 at sense 1, or earlier), inorganic, abiogenic (1906 in facteur abiotique , or earlier), harmful to living organisms (1910 or earlier, with reference to radiation). Compare ancient Greek ἄβιος not to be lived or survived ( < ἀ- a- prefix6 + βίος life: see bio- comb. form). With sense 2 compare earlier abiotically adv.
1. Characterized by the absence of life; unable to support life; azoic. Also: harmful to or destructive of living organisms.
