Etymology: < German lupulon (W. Wöllmer 1916, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 49 781), < modern Latin lupulus , used either as the specific epithet of the hop, Humulus lupulus, or †as a name for the genus Humulus (compare Latin lupus hop): see -one suffix.
Chemistry.
A bitter, crystalline, cyclic ketone, C26H38O4, that is an important constituent of hops and has strong antibiotic activity.
