Etymology: In sense 1 < French abiétine (A. Cailliot 1830, in Jrnl. de pharmacie 16 437) < classical Latin abiet- , abiēs fir tree (see abietic adj.) + French -ine -ine suffix⁵. Compare German Abietin (1834; < French). Sense 2 may show a spelling variant of abietene n. (compare sense 1 at that entry); it is unclear whether -ene comb. form or -ine suffix⁵ was the original suffix.
