Etymology: Partly (originally) < German Lot, †Loth unit of weight (Middle High German lōt a weight made of lead, unit of weight), and partly (in some later uses) < its cognate early modern Dutch lood, †loot unit of weight (Old Dutch lōd , Middle Dutch lōde , loot ), both specific uses of the words for ‘piece of lead, lead’ (see lead n.¹).Compare Old Frisian lād, lēd, Middle Low German lōt, lȫde, all denoting a weight made from lead, and hence a unit of weight. Compare also ( < Dutch) post-classical Latin lodus unit of weight (from 12th cent. in Dutch sources), and ( < German) Old French, Middle French lot (12th cent.), Russian lot (1534).

A denomination of weight formerly in use in Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, and some other European countries, equivalent to ¹/ ₃₂ of the local pound, or half the local ounce.
