Etymology: < classical Latin abiet-, abiēs fir tree (see abietic adj.) + -ene comb. form. Sense 1 may show a spelling variant of abietine n. (compare sense 2 at that entry); it is unclear whether -ene comb. form or -ine suffix⁵ was the original suffix.

1. A volatile, odoriferous liquid hydrocarbon mixture obtained by distillation of the resin of the digger pine of California, Pinus sabiniana, and formerly used as a solvent and in patent medicines; = abietine n. 2. Now rare.The mixture called abietene consists mainly of n-heptane, CH₃(CH₂)₅CH₃.
