Etymology: Apparently < Lawrie, Lowrie, Lourie, etc., pet forms (compare -y suffix6) of the male forename Lawrence (see Laurence n.2). Compare laurence n.1The motivation for application of this forename to the fox is uncertain and disputed; association with lour v., with which the word is sometimes collocated in Henryson, has been suggested but is not universally accepted. Compare also Reynard n.
