Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Pretoria , -an suffix.
Etymology: < Pretoria, the name of the executive and administrative capital of South Africa (formerly the capital of the South African (or Transvaal) Republic), located in the northern part of Gauteng province, and named for the Voortrekker leader Andries Wilhelmus Jacobus Pretorius (1798–1853) + -an suffix.In May 2005 the South African Geographical Names Council approved changing the city's name to Tshwane (already the name of the administrative area in which Pretoria and several other towns are situated), but the change has not yet received Government approval.
