Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: lord n., and conj.1, lady n.
Etymology: < the plural of lord n. + and conj.1 + the plural of lady n., probably so called on account of its spadix and spathe looking like male and female genitals; with similar associations compare e.g. earlier priest's pintle n. (b) at priest n. Compounds 5, cuckoo-pintle n., and perhaps wake-robin n.In the 19th cent. also interpreted as being so called on account of variation between dark and light-coloured spadices, the dark seen as the lords, the light as the ladies (wearing dark-coloured suits and light-coloured dresses, respectively); compare parson-and-clerk n. (b) at parson n. Compounds 2.
