单词 loaghtan
释义

loaghtanadj.n.

Brit. /ˈlɒkt(ə)n/, /ˈlɒxt(ə)n/, U.S. /ˈlɑkt(ə)n/, /ˈlɑxt(ə)n/, Manx English /ˈlɒxtən/, /ˈlɔːxtən/, /ˈlɒɡtən/, /ˈlɒktən/
Forms: 1700s laughtown, 1800s–1900s loghtyn, 1800s– laughton, 1800s– loaghtan, 1800s– loaghtyn, 1800s– loghtan. Also with capital initial.
Origin: Probably a borrowing from Manx. Etymon: Manx loaghtyn.
Etymology: Probably < Manx loaghtyn dun, greyish-brown (1812 with reference to the colour of sheep, or earlier), probably reflecting either (i) Early Irish luchdonn ( < either luch mouse (of unknown origin) or an unattested cognate of ancient Greek λύκος wolf (see wolf n.) + donn : see dun adj.), or perhaps (ii) Early Irish lachtna (often of garments) grey, dun, perhaps denoting the colour of undyed wool ( < lacht milk; cognate with or borrowed < classical Latin lact- , lac : see lacto- comb. form); compare Scottish Gaelic lachdann dun, tawny, homespun grey.In forms laughtown and laughton perhaps with folk-etymological reinterpretation as a place name, although there is apparently no place with this name in the Isle of Man.
Originally Manx English.
