Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly a borrowing from Turkish. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Ottoman Turkish lokum; Greek λουκούμι.
Etymology: Probably originally < Ottoman Turkish lokum (Turkish lokum ), short for rāhat-᠍ı-lokum rahat lokum n. Compare earlier rahat lokum n. In β. forms < modern Greek λουκούμι (1836 or earlier) < Ottoman Turkish lokum.Ottoman Turkish lokum is also attested in the 16th cent. as a variant of lokma kind of sweet dough fritter (also 16th cent.; Turkish lokma ), specific use of lokma mouthful < Arabic luqma morsel, bit: see rahat lokum n. Compare the following slightly earlier reference to this sweet in an English context:1839 W. Knight Oriental Outl. 77 The honey of Tino [sc. Tinos, an island in the Cyclades, which was under Ottoman rule at the time], spread over a Lokma cake, affords a delicious morceau. The Lokma is a flour cake as large as an egg, and is much esteemed by all classes in Greece and Turkey. In forms loukoum, loucoum influenced by modern Greek λουκούμι. In β. plural form loukoumia (denoting individual pieces of Turkish delight) after the modern Greek plural form λουκούμια.
