Forms: 1800s longecorn (irregular), 1800s– longicorn. Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Longicornes; Latin Longicornia.
Etymology: Partly (i) < scientific Latin Longicornes (P.-A. Latreille in Cuvier Règne animal (1817) III. 337), and partly (ii) < scientific Latin Longicornia (1824 or earlier), former group names, uses as nouns of masculine and neuter plural, respectively, of scientific Latin longicornis long-horned (1758 or earlier) < classical Latin longi- longi- comb. form + cornū horn (see cornu n.). Compare French Longicornes , plural noun, longicorne , adjective (both 1817 in Latreille). With the use as adjective compare earlier long-horned adj.
Entomology (now rare in technical use).

Designating beetles of the former group Longicornes or Longicornia, comprising the longhorn beetles (family Cerambycidae).In quot. 2005 used spec. of the Australian species Agrianome spinicollis.
