Etymology: < German Atelestit ( A. Breithaupt Vollständige Charakteristik des Mineral-Syst. (ed. 3, 1832) 307) < ancient Greek ἀτέλεστος without end, unaccomplished ( < ἀ- a- prefix⁶ + τελεῖν to finish, complete (see telesm n.) + -τος , suffix forming adjectives) + German -it -ite suffix¹, with remodelling of the ending after -ite suffix¹; perhaps so called with allusion to the unknown composition of the mineral when it was first described.

Mineralogy.

A rare mineral found in deposits of bismuth- and arsenic-bearing minerals and typically occurring as yellowish or green botryoidal aggregates. Cf. rhagite n.Atelestite is an arsenate of bismuth, Bi₈(AsO₄)₃(OH)₅O₅. Crystal system: monoclinic.
