Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Apparently also partly a borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymons: Dutch likkewaan; Afrikaans *likkewaan.
Etymology: In α. forms < South African Dutch *likkewaan (compare Afrikaans likkewaan (1899 or earlier)), apparently a variant (reflecting local pronunciation) of Dutch †legewaan , †leguwaan (18th cent. or earlier), which are in turn variants of leguaan leguan n. In β. forms apparently directly < Dutch †legewaan , †leguwaan , variants of leguaan leguan n. Compare earlier leguan n. 2.
South African.
Either of two large African monitor lizards, esp. the Nile monitor, Varanus niloticus; = leguan n. 2.
