Etymology: < liking adj.1 + -ly suffix2.Compare Old English līciendlic (adjective) agreeable, pleasant ( < liking adj.1 + -ly suffix1); also in the compound adjective wel līciendlic well-pleasing (compare well-liking adj.), the following example of which has sometimes mistakenly been interpreted as showing the (otherwise unattested) corresponding adverb (and hence an antedating of sense 1):OE Paris Psalter (1932) cxl. 8 Forþon min gebed nu gyt becnum standeð, þæt him on wisum is wel lycendlice.
