Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: lightning n., bird n.
Etymology: < lightning n. + bird n. In sense 3 originally after Zulu inyoni yezulu ( < inyoni bird + yezulu of lightning); subsequently also used to translate etymologically unrelated words for this spirit, such as Zulu impundulu and Xhosa impundulu. With use denoting the hamerkop compare e.g. Tswana tladi lightning, also (in different noun class) denoting the hamerkop.

Also: (a name for) any of various birds identified with this spirit, esp. the hamerkop, Scopus umbretta.The lightning bird figures in the mythology of peoples including the Xhosa, Zulu, and Sotho. It is variously held to emit lightning when it swoops to earth; to appear on ground that has been struck by lightning; to lay its eggs on such ground; or to cause those who try to steal its eggs to be struck by lightning.
