Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin autodidactus; Greek αὐτοδίδακτος.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin autodidactus self-taught (1526) or its etymon ancient Greek αὐτοδίδακτος self-taught < αὐτο- auto- comb. form1 + διδακτός taught (see didactive adj.). Compare Middle French, French autodidacte (1557 as adjective, 1826 as noun), German Autodidakt (first half of the 19th cent.; late 17th cent. in Latinate form autodidactus).The use by St Jerome referred to by More (see quot. 1534) has not been traced. In α. forms perhaps after Greek neuter nouns ending in -ον. N.E.D. (1885) gives the pronunciation as (ǭ·todidæ:kt) /ˈɔːtəʊdɪˌdækt/.
