The conversion into lactones..to which hydroxy acids are subject in aqueous solution in presence of another acid, occurs in the case of γ-hydroxyvaleric acid, when merely dissolved in water; this is explained..on the assumption that the acid is in part dissociated, and that the free hydrogen ions act catalytically.
