Union Biochem. vi. 39 Enzymes catalysing the linking together of two molecules, coupled with the breaking of a pyrophosphate link in ATP, etc., will be known as ligases (pronounced with a short ‘i’ in English). These enzymes have hitherto been known as synthetases... A new systematic name was necessary.
