Origin: A borrowing from Latin; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: Latin leguminaris.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin leguminaris (1634 or earlier; < classical Latin legūmin- , legūmen legumen n.1 + -āris -ar suffix1), after French léguminaire (1808 in L.-C. Richard Démonstrations botaniques 20, the source referred to in quot. 1855, or earlier).Compare the following isolated earlier example of leguminary:1665 R. Lovell Παμβοτανολογια (ed. 2) 63 Leguminary, serving as Pulse; as Beans. Pease. Lentils.
Botany. rare and now disused.
