Etymology: < classical Latin lēgulēius specialist in legal technicalities (see note) + -an suffix.Classical Latin lēgulēius probably represents a popular formation on lēg- , lēx law (see legal adj., with allusion, on the one hand, to legulus fruit-picker, and on the other to a proper name such as Canulēius or Proculēius, possibly with reference to a particular individual.

Chiefly depreciative. Now rare.
