Etymology: Origin unknown. Perhaps compare forms of lay v.¹ with medial g, with possible reference to the tool being used for laying reeds.With β. forms perhaps compare ledger n. 2b, although the nature of any relationship is unclear.

Thatching. Originally and chiefly English regional (East Anglian).

A tool used to smooth the thatch by driving the butts of the reeds evenly into place. Cf. ledger n. 2b.A legget is made of a flat board (with a handle attached) which is grooved on one side; as the legget is hammered against the butts of the reeds, the grooves dress them into place. Traditionally the board was wooden and studded with flattened nails (to create the grooves); metal cast with a grooved pattern is now also used.
