Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French autostop.
Etymology: < French autostop hitch-hiking (1938) < auto car (see auto n.5) + either stop (interjection) ‘stop!’ (1927 as inscription on traffic stop signs, after corresponding use in English; 1792 in nautical use; < stop v.) or stop (noun) brake light (1935; transferred use of stop act of stopping (1855; < stop n.2)).
Esp. in French contexts: hitch-hiking.

1938 Los Angeles Times 4 Sept. iii. 8/3 Thumbing a ride is called auto-stop, and so far it has proved rather unsuccessful because of the few automobiles on French roads.
