单词 ladys thistle
释义

lady's thistlen.

Brit. /ˌleɪdɪz ˈθɪsl/, U.S. /ˌleɪdiz ˈθɪs(ə)l/
Forms:

α. 1500s–1600s ladie thistle, 1500s–1600s lady thistle.

β. 1500s ladyes thistel, 1600s– ladies thistle, 1600s– lady's thistle, 1800s– ladies' thistle.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: lady n., thistle n.
Etymology: In α. forms < lady n. + thistle n., perhaps originally reflecting a genitive compound with unmarked first element (see discussion at lady n.); it has been suggested (e.g. in quot. 1909) that the plant was so called because the white spots on its leaves were popularly supposed to have been caused by the Virgin Mary's milk dripping on them, but there appears to be no early evidence from 16th- or 17th-cent. herbals to support this suggestion. In β. forms < the genitive of lady n. + thistle n., although the first element is sometimes apprehended as plural. Compare Dutch vrouwendistel (18th cent. or earlier), German Mariendistel , (regional) Frauendistel (both first half of the 16th cent. or earlier), Swedish mariatistel (1645 as †marietistel ), Danish marietidsel , etc. Compare earlier Our Lady's thistle n. at Our Lady n. Compounds 2b, milk thistle n. 2.
A southern European milk thistle, Silybum marianum, with white-blotched leaves.
