Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin dēlīrus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin dēlīrus insane, crazy ( < dē- de- prefix + līra ridge, furrow (see lirate adj.); compare delire v.) + -ous suffix.
rare after early 18th cent.
Delirious (in various senses); esp. in an acutely disturbed state of mind characterized by restlessness, illusions, and incoherence.Some later examples may represent a typographical error for delirious.
