Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Kombi.
Etymology: < German Kombi (c1950 denoting the Volkswagen Type 23 van: see below), use as noun of Kombi- , combining form, shortened < Kombination (see combination n.) or kombiniert (see combined adj.), with allusion to the dual purpose afforded by the removable rear bench-seats, which enabled the van to transport either passengers or goods. Compare combi n. and slightly earlier combi adj.The Volkswagen Type 23 was first produced in May 1950.
