Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek δύναμις , -o- connective.
Etymology: < ancient Greek δύναμις power, force ( < δύνασθαι to be able (see dynast n.) + -μις, suffix forming nouns) + -o- connective.Compare French dynamo- , German dynamo- . Compare Hellenistic Greek δυναμο- , used in compounds of ancient Greek δύναμις in its mathematical sense of ‘power, square’, e.g. δυναμόκυβος square multiplied by cube. In dynamo-electric machine after German dynamoelektrische Maschine (1868 or earlier).
An element, derived from Greek δύναμις ‘power, force’, used to form combinations and derivative words. Cf. also dynamometamorphism n.
