单词 kiskitomas
释义

kiskitomasn.

Brit. /kɪskᵻˈtɒməs/, U.S. /kɪskᵻˈtɑməs/
Forms:

α. 1700s keskatomas, 1800s kiskythomas, 1800s kisskatomas, 1800s–1900s kiskitomas, 1900s– kisky thomas (also with capital initials).

β. 1700s–1800s kiskatoma, 1800s kiscatoma, 1800s kiskatom, 1800s kiskatomies (plural), 1800s kiskytom.

Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch kiskythomas.
Etymology: Apparently < North American Dutch kiskythomas (see note) < Munsee Delaware tesquachtámi shagbark hickory nut, with remodelling of the final syllables after the male forename Thomas (see Thomas n.). Compare Munsee Delaware tesquachtaminschi shagbark hickory tree. The following appears to be the only written evidence of the North American Dutch word:1810 F. A. Michaux Histoire des Arbres Forestiers de l'Amérique Septentrionale I. 20 (table) Shell bark hickery..nom le plus en usage dans tous les Etats-Unis...Kiskythomas, par les Hollandois du New-Jersey. [‘Shell bark hickery,..the name most commonly used in all of the United States...Kiskythomas, by the Dutch of New Jersey.’] Variant forms. The β. forms reflect the final syllables of the Munsee Delaware word more closely; the expected Dutch intermediary for these forms does not survive. Forms ending in -tom may ultimately reflect a regular (though unattested) regional variant of the Munsee Delaware word.
U.S. regional (chiefly New York and New Jersey). Now historical and rare.
