Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin importuōsus, inportuōsus.
Etymology: < classical Latin importuōsus (also inportuōsus) having no harbours < im- im- prefix2 + portus port n.1 + -ōsus -ous suffix. Compare Middle French importueux (1544; rare).The following probably shows an error for importunes , 3rd person singular present indicative of importune v.:1598 W. Shakespeare Love's Labour's Lost ii. i. 32 Tell him, the Daughter of the King of France On serious busines crauing quicke dispatch, Importuous [1623 Importunes] personall conference with his grace.
Obsolete. rare.
Of an area of coastline: that has no port or harbour, or is unsuitable for harbouring a vessel.
