1897 Otago Witness (Dunedin, N.Z.) 14 Oct. 50/5 Linlithgow [Abbey], a splendid old structure,..was reopened for worship a few weeks ago, having been stripped of its whitewash and dirt and partition walls, by which the stately pile had been ‘kirkified’.

1964 W. G. Carleton in Yale Rev. Spring 401 Hawthorne found the rural villages of Scotland still drearier; even the old churches had been ‘uglified’ and ‘kirkified’ with whitewash.
