Etymology: < kirk n. + garth n.1, perhaps after an equivalent compound in early Scandinavian: compare Old Icelandic kirkju-garðr , Old Swedish kirkio garþer (Swedish kyrkogård ), Danish kyrckægarth (Danish kirkegård ). Compare also church garth n. and earlier kirkyard n.
Now chiefly English regional (northern).
A churchyard. Cf. kirkyard n.Attested earliest in surnames.
