Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: chincough n.
Etymology: Northern and north-east midland variant of chincough n. Compare earlier kinkhost n.The β. forms (especially the Middle English forms kyngys cogh, kyngys coghe) apparently reflect folk-etymological association with king n.; compare γ. forms at kinkhost n. In γ. forms after early modern Dutch kind-hoest (Kiliaan), itself an alteration of kinck-hoest kinkhost n. as a result of association with kind child.
In later use British regional. Now historical.
A respiratory disorder characterized by bouts of severe coughing, typically followed by a noisy, gasping intake of breath; spec. the infectious bacterial disease whooping cough (pertussis).
