Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French laborage ; labour n., -age suffix.
Etymology: Partly (i) < Middle French laborage, labourage, etc. (French labourage ) produce, revenue from working the land (early 13th cent. in Old French), agriculture (mid 13th cent.), work, labour (13th cent.), piece of land which is cultivated or which is going to be cultivated (13th cent.; < laborer , labourer labour v. + -age -age suffix), and partly (ii, especially in sense 3) < labour n. + -age suffix. Compare Old Occitan laboratge.
