Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: king n., cup n.
Etymology: < king n. + cup n.
Originally: any of several plants of the genus Ranunculus having bright yellow, cup-shaped flowers, spec. the buttercups R. bulbosus, R. acris, and R. repens, and lesser celandine, R. ficaria (now rare). In later use chiefly: the marsh marigold, Caltha palustris. Also: a flower of any of these plants.
