Etymology: < knowledge v. + -ing suffix1. Compare knowing n., earlier knowledge n., and later acknowledging n.The source of quot. a1300 at sense 1 is a probably spurious charter (see discussion at knowledge v.). In biblical contexts in specific sense ‘praise, worship’ (e.g. in quot. a1382 at sense 1) after post-classical Latin confessio confession n. in this sense (Vulgate).
