Etymology: < knowing, present participle of know v. (see forms at that entry) + -ly suffix2. In sense 1 after post-classical Latin cognoscibiliter clearly, intelligibly (Vulgate: Wisdom 13:5, the passage translated in quot. a1382). In sense 2 after classical Latin scienter scienter adv. Compare earlier unknowingly adv. and slightly later knowing adj.
