Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French justicies; Latin justicies, justiciare.
Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman and Law French justicies (a1339 or earlier; a1321 or earlier as justice ; end of the 13th cent. or earlier as bref de justicies), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin justicies, name of a writ (13th cent. in British sources), use as noun of justicies, lit. ‘(that) you compel by judicial authority,’ 2nd person singular present subjunctive of justiciare justice v.The writ was so called from its opening formulation; compare: ▸ 1277 in G. J. Turner & H. E. Salter Reg. St. Augustine’s Abbey Canterbury (1915) I. 325 Precipimus tibi quod iusticies Simonem..quod iuste..reddat..viginti libras.
Law. Now historical.
A writ directed to a sheriff, conferring power to deal with debt claims in a county court for sums exceeding the usual limit (40 shillings). Also more fully writ of justicies, justicies writ.
