单词 aspen
释义

aspenadj.n.

/ˈɑːspən//ˈaspən/
Forms: ? Old English æspen, Middle English– aspen, 1500s–1700s aspine, 1600s–1800s aspin.
Etymology: < asp n.1 + -en suffix4; compare ashen. In aspen leaf we might suppose a survival of the Old English genitive æspan: see the first quot.; compare Middle High German espenlaub; the later substantive use evidently arose from taking aspen in such constructions as a noun used attributively; later instances of the adjective may be really attributive uses of the factitious noun.
