Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Mixe n., Zoque n.
Etymology: < Mixe n. + Zoque n. Compare earlier Mixe–Zoquean adj. and n. and the following quots., which represent an equivalent grouping in an obsolete 19th-cent. language classification:1893 Science 10 Nov. 257/1 Dr. C. Sapper..had found an unclassified tongue..but..had already..noted its resemblance to the Zoque-Mixe family.1899 F. Starr Indians S. Mexico 26 Orozco y Berra considered the Mixe language unrelated, but some writers unite it with the Zoque into a Zoque-Mixe family.1900 Science 4 May 713/1 Pimentel's list... Zoque-Mixé.
