单词 judo
释义

judon.

Brit. /ˈdʒuːdəʊ/, U.S. /ˈdʒudoʊ/
Forms: 1800s ju-do, 1800s– jiudo, 1800s– judo, 1900s– zyudo, 2000s– judou.
Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese jūdō.
Etymology: < Japanese jūdō (apparently late 19th cent. in this sense; earlier as an alternative name for jujitsu (1797)) < jū- (in jūjutsu jujitsu n.) + -dō way, spiritual discipline (see budo n.).The traditional foundation date is 1882, the year Jigoro Kano opened his own school (later known as the Kodokan), but it is unclear whether Japanese jūdō was already used at that date to denote his style. While the style was being developed, an earlier version was apparently known in Japanese as Kanō-ryū jūjutsu , lit. ‘Kano-style jujitsu’ (compare ryu n.). The form judou reflects Japanese kana orthography, in which the syllable is represented by the symbols for do + u.
A martial art originating in Japan, using movement, holds, and leverage to unbalance the opponent, and practised as a sport or form of exercise.Judo was developed as a gentler form of jujitsu, and was introduced in 1882 by the Japanese educator Jigoro Kano. See note at etymology.
