Compare earlier judge n., which is more common in all uses.With the β. forms compare -or suffix, and also Anglo-Norman jugeor, juggeour, jugur, etc., Anglo-Norman and Middle French jugeour, Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French jugeur (c1050 in Old French as jugedor in sense ‘sovereign ruler of a country’, c1100 in sense ‘judge, magistrate’).
