1. Any of several African pipits of the genus Macronyx; esp. the Cape longclaw, Macronyx capensis, which has a distinctive red throat and yellow breast.

1936 E. L. Gill First Guide S. Afr. Birds 78 Cape Longclaw, kalkoentjie, cutthroat lark... A well-known bird; the name Kalkoentjie (little turkey) presumably referring to its red throat.

2. Any of various plants of the family Iridaceae with flowers resembling a turkey's wattles, esp. the gladiolus Gladiolus alatus, native to the Cape, which bears brick-red and yellow flowers.
