Esp. in German-speaking contexts: a council responsible for governing the Jewish population of a town or district.Chiefly with reference to councils created in the towns and cities of the Generalgouvernement (the German-occupied part of Poland which had not been incorporated into the Reich) and other German-occupied territories of Central Europe from September 1939 onwards.
