Etymology: < classical Latin addere to attach, place, put or fit, to insert, to apply, to assign, attach, to associate, involve, to confer, bestow, to impart, to do or suffer in addition, to join, to increase, to take into account as well, to say or write in addition, to introduce < ad- ad- prefix + dare to give, put (see datum n.). Compare Anglo-Norman adder (second half of the 14th cent. or earlier), Portuguese adir (1258 as †ader); also (only in mathematics) German addieren (15th cent.).

Originally and chiefly Hong Kong English. add oil!: expressing encouragement, incitement, or support: go on! go for it! [After Chinese (Cantonese) gā yáu, with reference to petrol being injected into an engine ( < to add + yáu petrol, variant (with tonal modification) of yàuh oil of any kind), and the corresponding Mandarin jiāyóu.] In quots. 1964 and 1980, a contextually supplied translation of the Chinese phrase (in the latter example, also serving as the article's title).
