单词 judahite
释义

Judahiten.adj.

Brit. /ˈdʒuːdəʌɪt/, U.S. /ˈdʒudəˌaɪt/
Forms: 1700s– Judahite, 1700s– Judaite.
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; modelled on a Hebrew lexical item. Etymons: proper name Judah , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < Judah (Hebrew yĕhūḏāh ), the name of one of the twelve tribes of Israel (see Judas n.) and of the ancient Hebrew kingdom of Judah (see note below) + -ite suffix1, ultimately after Hebrew yĕhūḏī (see Jew n.).The kingdom of Judah was established after the partition of the united kingdom of Israel following Solomon's death in the late 10th cent. b.c. It occupied the area of southern Palestine which included the capital Jerusalem and the lands to the south of it, the homeland of the tribe of Judah. Immediately after the partition this was the only one of the twelve tribes of Israel to remain loyal to the descendants of King David, though it was joined by the tribe of Benjamin shortly afterwards. The kingdom ended with the destruction of Jerusalem and the deportation of the surviving population into exile in Babylonia in 587 b.c.
