Origin: Either (i) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: gendarme n.; French gendarme.
Etymology: < gendarme n. or its etymon French gendarme, with (probably humorous) substitution of the male personal name John for the first element (compare John n. 1 and later John n. 3).
