单词 master of the rolls
释义

Master of the Rollsn.

Brit. /ˈmɑːstər əv ðə ˌrəʊlz/, /ˈmastər əv ðə ˌrəʊlz/, U.S. /ˈmæstər əv ðə ˌroʊlz/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: master n.1, of prep., the adj., English Rolls , roll n.1
Etymology: < master n.1 + of prep. + the adj. + Rolls, plural of roll n.1 Compare post-classical Latin magister rotulorum (from early 15th cent. in British sources).
1. Law. A senior judge who presides over the Court of Appeal in England and Wales. Also in extended use.Master of the Rolls was originally the title of the keeper of records to the Lord Chancellor (cf. the related titles Clerk of the Rolls, Keeper of the Rolls). Since then the office has undergone much change; as one of the Masters in Chancery the Master of the Rolls gradually took on judicial duties, and from the 18th cent. sat as a judge in the Court of Chancery. From 1875 the Master of the Rolls became president of the Court of Appeal, and from 1981 president of the Court of Appeal (Civil Division). The office still entails responsibility for the records of the Court of Chancery, although general responsibility for public records passed to the Lord Chancellor in 1958.
